The 2014 season was a breakout year for Kovacs. He won the Boston New Balance Grand Prix with his first 70 foot throw. The indoor season culminated with Kovacs placing 3rd at the USATF Indoor National Championships with a throw of 70 ft 5.5 in (21.476 m). Kovacs then went on to string together a series of 70 foot throws in the begining of the outdoor season. Coach Venegas adjusted training towards the USATF Outdoor National Championships with hopes of longer throws and more personal bests. Kovacs unleashed a huge toss of 72 ft 4 inches to become the 22nd man in history to throw over the 22 meter mark. The mark places him 19th on the all-time list. Kovacs came away from the meet with his first national championship.
The 2015 season will start with local California meets then he will continue to the international circuit. His first diamond league meet will be contested on May 15 in Doha, Qutar. Kovacs will plan to defend his USATF national title and continue on to represent the United States at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China.
